In Praise of Healing Power of Foods...

1. Cinnamon has been a highly valued spice since ancient times. Recently, researchers have discovered that cinnamon may help control blood sugar levels by increasing the efficiency of insulin (Source: “Anti-aging Bible” by Earl Mindell, R.Ph, Ph.D.)

2. Rosemary is currently being studied as a form of cancer therapy due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and carcinogen-blocking effects. Source: “Prescription for Nutritional Healing” by Phyllis Balch, CNC and James Balch, MD)

3. Garlic is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It also prevents blood clotting, is an antioxidant and neutralizes free radicals. It helps prevent cancer by blocking both the initiation and promotion of cancer cells. (Source: “The Food Connection” by Sam Graci)

Food for Thought…

1. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

2. Foods’ ability to heal comes from the fact that they are formed from organic chemicals, just as we are. If we don’t feed ourselves the way we were meant to be fed, we may end up in dis-ease, which is a form of disharmony. (“Foods that heal” by dr. Bernard Jensen)

3. Did you know that some foods are “bugged”? The red food dyes, carmine and cochineal extract, used in various foods is made from the dried bodies of insects. Every year couple hundred people end up in the emergency rooms because of allergic reaction. Symptoms include itching, swelling of the eyes or tongue, difficulty breathing, hives, and headaches. Labels may read: "color added," “E120”, “Red #4”, or "natural color" when cochineal or carmine is present in the product. Foods like soft drinks, candy, strawberry milk, fake crab, some wines and liqueurs like Campari and some cosmetics use the above dyes. It takes 70,000 of these insects to produce one pound of coloring. (Source: “Bugged Foods” by Josee Guillemette)

4. Fast food and other industries spend mega-bucks to target children. About 78% of the food advertised during TV programs watched by young children is junk food, with ads for candy, sweets and soft drinks making 45% of the total ads. (Source: Center for Science in the Public Interest).

5. Burger King makes some of the worst French fries you can buy. A King Size order packs 600 calories and three-quarters of your daily maximum for heart-unhealthy fat. (Source: Center for Science in the Public Interest).
